On the way back, her father said, "That tender woman, Miss Agatha, was not very responsive, and her eyes were clouded as one experiencing deep grief.
"Cecilia was nervous and fearful but I think within a few days, she'll be all right, but I will check often on Agatha. If she goes too far adrift, I'll recommend she be taken into a care facility for a while."
Madeline commented, "Father, is she that lost? Her manner mimics her appearance. She is child-like in many ways."
"Perhaps she will surprise us. She has the love and support of her sisters, and that can do so much to heal someone's broken heart.
"On another matter, why do you think your ghostly advisor is holding another séance?"
"I honestly don't know. Her behavior on Halloween cast suspicion on her. After Sheba's accident, I did not see her anywhere. I wasn't looking for her specifically, but with her elaborate veil and jewels, it is impossible not to get a glimpse of her in a room. I have no idea what she was doing or if she had any part in the death of Shannon, but it makes no sense why she lied unless she was up to no good."
"There might be an explanation you've not yet discovered. Whatever was the motivation to draw the deceased woman back to this country and all the other things you told me about are not coincidental. The absurdity that everyone seemed to have an alibi makes them all look guilty. Someone had to put that nine of spades card in the attic."
"I thought of that, but there was plenty of time for someone to sneak up to the attic before the séance. I don't think anyone was paying particular attention to the upstairs. We were all concentrating on the basement."
"Well, a young woman is dead, and an exotic cat, and expensive jewelry stolen—the story is not going to end with just these crimes."
"Unfortunately, I believe that to be true also."
As the arrived at Erie Street, she said, "Father, look...the moonlight garden is in full bloom. What a wonderful night it would have been for Hugh and I to have our tea by the bay window and observe the garden."
When Hugh first moved to Chicago from England, he brought with him moonlight blooming flowers and the two had planted the garden beneath the front bay windows. They spent many a late evening sharing tea and conversation, delighting in the blooming flowers and each other's company.
"I'd hoped one day he might be part of our family."
"But he is, Father, he is."
She kissed her father's cheek and said nothing more. The doctor left to attend to his young patient down the street. She sat by the window—regretting Hugh was absent—sipping her Early Grey and writing in her journal.
